A College prepares students for the
practical life. Books provide information about different things, while clubs
and societies in the college impart practical experience of life. With this in
view, the students union in the college is started. A students union is an
elected body of the students. The entire students community in a college from
the electorate. The students union has a president, a vice president, a
secretary, a general secretary, and a number of class representatives. A senior
member of the staff supervises the activities of the union. He helps and guides
the office bearers. The function and the purpose of the students union is to
look after the welfare of the students and to help them. It arranges function,
meeting, dramas, debates and other activities in which the students are
interested. It trains the students for a responsible position a in a democratic
society. Funds are given at the disposal of the student’s representatives to
teach how to handle the public money. The union develops them in the students
the power to organize functions. In such function their organizing capacity is
tested and sharpened. It also invites distinguished writers, speakers,
statesmen and foreign visitors to introduce them to the students. Some unions
also undertake some social service projects. It also helps in promoting
discipline in the students. It is a sort of link between students and the
principal. In short a student’s union is a training ground for the students
where they prepare themselves for life. From this point of view, the existence
of such a body is very necessary.
Unfortunately, there is a great
misunderstanding about the Sims and purposes of this body. Instead of learning
how to organize function, the representatives being to interfere in the administration
of the college. They threaten the principal to go on strike. In this way they
turn the union into centers of indiscipline, chaos and confusion. It must be
remembered that the students union is not a trade union for bargaining. There
is no opposition between the interests of the teachers and the students. The
union is for educative, not destructive purposes. The students must keep that
in mind: only then they can justify their union in the college.
